Eye Zen Council

The Eye Zen Council is an Advisory Board assembled to support the mission of Eye Zen Presents. We are a working board that has a focus on fundraising and advising on strategies for our future work, community investment, and action plans such as EDI (Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion). Members of the Council facilitate and guide strategic direction and support of the Organization. The Council provides interpersonal introductions for Artistic Director and staff, spearheads fundraising efforts, and influences strategic decisions about the future of the Organization. Governance is guided by an established Advisory Board Charter.

 
 

Kristin Vogel-campbell

Kristin Vogel-Campbell, Ed.D. (she/her/hers) has nearly twenty years of experience in Special Education in a variety of roles. She began her career as a Special Education aide at the Chinatown Head Start in New York City, and has taught in a variety of settings in California with students aged 5-14. She has served as a district level Program Specialist, Director of Special Education, and is currently a Coordinator of Special Education for a PK-8 suburban school district in Northern California.


Dr. Vogel-Campbell received her undergraduate degree from Hunter College, City University of New York; her Master’s from New York University, and her Doctorate of Education from California State University, East Bay. Her research centers the perspectives of parents and families from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse backgrounds. Oftentimes these voices are disregarded and silenced, when they should be valued, respected, and celebrated. She has presented at local, national, and international conferences on the intersection of disability and identities.

Kristin was drawn to the work of Eye Zen because of the focus on researching and elevating the stories and realities of 2SLGBTQIA+ elders and connecting our community with its rich and robust history. She is an avid bibliophile and discophile, and is a dedicated Trekkie.


rick oculto

Rick Oculto runs the Education Programs at Our Family Coalition, a non-profit based in the San Francisco Bay Area that serves queer families and children. He has worked in queer advocacy for over 20 years and is currently helping lead the implementation of queer history and social science in California in collaboration with the California Department of Education. Rick has conducted trainings for thousands of students, educators, and youth workers across the United States focusing on diversity, harassment, gender stereotypes, and other queer issues. He holds a dual B.A. degree in Psychology and Spanish from Seattle University in Washington and a Master of Arts Degree in Social Welfare at UC Berkeley specializing in management and planning. Rick uses he pronouns and is an avid gamer.


paul peninger

Paul is an urban economist and planner specializing in the policy and planning intersections between community planning, sustainable development, and economic feasibility. Throughout his 25-year career as a consultant, teacher, policy advocate, and community development finance professional, Paul has maintained a strong commitment to affordable housing as the cornerstone of equitable and sustainable communities, successfully leading and participating in hundreds of affordable housing plans, strategies, policy studies, and implementation projects in diverse communities across the country. Paul is currently a Principal with Baird+Driskell Community Planning and a regular lecturer in urban economics at UC Berkeley. A resident of San Francisco, Paul is proud to be an advocate for the preservation of queer urban history and the performing arts.


Juan Manzo

Juan Manzo (Citizen Artist) is an Arts Education professional & advocate with almost two decades of experience in the field. He has led arts education programs and professional development workshops in Arts Integration for teachers and young people in New York and California. Juan has worked as a Teaching Artist and Arts Education Consultant for multiple organizations including StageWrite, The Old Globe, San 2020-2021 4 Francisco Opera, Young Audiences of the Bay Area, La Jolla Playhouse and Center Theater Group. As a member of the Board of Directors for the Arts Education Alliance of the Bay Area, he has worked for a stronger and more equitable arts education community in the Bay Area. A strong believer in using the arts for creative engagement and problem solving, he is deeply committed to ensuring access to the arts to all students regardless of socioeconomic status or race.


Brian Cardinale

Brian’s is currently the Director of Operations for Dolan Mental Health a private mental health and substance abuse outpatient practice with offices throughout the United States specializing in the treatment of formerly Federal incarcerated prisoners helping them to successfully reintegrate back into the community. He brings his long business and professional experience in operations and media to assist managing EyeZen programs, administration, and marketing. Originally from Michigan and relocating to his chosen home of San Francisco in 2014. Brian brings his passions of art, design, and knowledge seeking to help facilitate the expansion of queer history and those that have impacted our community. Outside of work and volunteering Brian likes to cook, hike, visit museums and galleries, and make homemade soap. Connect with Brian on LinkedIn!


MArian Doub

Marian Doub is nationally respected for her expertise in facilitating the design, build, and use of high-integrity data systems for monitoring and improving program results and client outcomes. Marian's reputation comes from her visionary work with dozens of small business development and community-based economic and asset development practitioner and intermediary agencies. Marian brings to her work more than three decades of practical experience adapting participatory evaluation methods, now known as empowerment or capacity building evaluation, to build the knowledge and data management tools nonprofits and supporters need to succeed. In addition, she has co-founded over five grassroots arts and social justice activist organizations and remains active with a variety of causes dedicated to solidarity, peace, and justice for all. Marian joined the Eye Zen Council in 2019 and brings an expertise in nonprofit management, group process, and strategic thinking.
